Joe has over forty years’ experience in both direct organization and business management as well as an investor in small and lower market businesses throughout the United States. 

He began his professional career as the Director of Community Services for the American Friends Service Committee in Chicago where he learned how to design and develop innovative programs that were responsive to the neighborhood challenges across the Midwest Region.  During his tenure he developed programs to address public welfare reform, public education, criminal justice, rural economic development and youth employment.  He was a senior manager for urban programs for the YMCA in both Chicago and Oakland, California; led one of the largest neighborhood organizations in Chicago and came to Pittsburgh to turnaround the largest community development corporation in the city. 

He went on to engage in business assistance and development starting with developing a nationally recognizeddistressed business program for the state of Pennsylvania before joining with the first of three business investment companies – American Capital Strategies, Gladstone Capital and FNB Capital Partners.  During his private sector investing career he evaluated well over 500 business opportunities, invested over $200 million in debt and equity and participated in the oversight of a twenty company portfolio during this period.  He is a graduate of the University of San Francisco with an undergraduate degree in Public Management.  He has lived and worked in the Pittsburgh area since 1989.

Kieran O'Dea, Hollymead Capital

Kieran has over 17 years of experience working with middle market companies in the areas of business consulting, expense reduction and growth strategies, compliance requirements, as well as acquisition and divestiture planning and implementation. 

A life-long Pittsburgher, Kieran began a career in Public Accounting after graduating from Robert Morris University in 1998. Kieran was a partner with BDO USA, LLP (formerly Alpern Rosenthal) where he helped lead the firm’s Manufacturing and Distribution Services Group as an Assurance Partner.  He later went on to serve as the Head of Transaction Advisory Services in the firm’s Pittsburgh Office.

In his role as an Assurance Partner in the Manufacturing and Distribution Services Group, Kieran assisted his clients with financial reporting and compliance issues, as well as business consulting in the areas of business combinations, inventory management and cost savings strategies, acquisition integration, and pro-forma and projected financial statements preparation for the purpose of gaining capital, restructuring debt and raising equity. He worked with clients having diverse ownership structures, including privately owned companies, multi-generational family businesses, private equity portfolio companies and foreign-owned US subsidiaries, ranging in size from $10M to over $300M in annual revenue. In addition, Kieran has experience serving clients operating in various industries, such as consumer products, food manufacturing, distribution, assembly and contract manufacturing, heavy equipment and steel processing manufacturing and services.

KIERAN O'DEA, CPA, Managing Partner

During his time as the Head of Transaction Advisory Services for BDO’s Pittsburgh office, Kieran led buy-side and sell-side due diligence projects with enterprise values ranging from $1M to in excess of $300M. The due diligence projects included performing financial due diligence centered on evaluating quality of earnings; calculations of average and target working capital amounts;  preparing pro-forma financial statements to evaluate potential acquisition targets or add-on acquisitions; and reviewing purchase agreements. Additionally, Kieran has a deep working knowledge of valuation techniques, such as discounted and undiscounted cash flow analyses and enterprise value calculations.

JIM BATTAGLIA, Operating Partner

Jim is the owner and founder of Resource Management Inc..  He launched RMI in November of 1991 to provide operations consulting to a broad cross-section of businesses in the manufacturing and distribution space.  Among his clients over his career were multiple food and beverage companies.  Jim’s unique approach is to be able to build a bottom’s up analysis of a business and identify the critical points of improvement that create value for the clients. 

As a part of the Hollymead team, Jim provides effective analysis within a short period of time on the nature of any opportunity.  Jim can look at everything from supply chain to floor level production to building a detailed management accounting system in any sized business.  While much of his career has been working with companies in varies stages of distress, his unique views allows us to quickly focus any potential acquisition on what the growth opportunities are – both in revenue and profitability.  Jim is a native Pittsburgher , attended the University of Pittsburgh and has been a member of the Turnaround Management Association.
